Ingredients

  1. Whole Masoor Dal (Lentils)- 1 cup
  2. Water- 3 cups or as required
  3. Cumin seeds- 1 tsp
  4. Asafoetida (Hing)- 1 pinch
  5. Bay leaf- 2 small
  6. Salt- 2 tsp or as per taste
  7. Turmeric powder- 1 tsp
  8. Red Chilli powder- 1 and half tsp
  9. Coriander powder- 1 tblsp
  10. Garam masala- 1 tsp
  11. Ginger- 2 inch
  12. Garlic- 2-3 cloves
  13. Green chillies- 2
  14. Onion- 1
  15. Tomato- 1
  16. Ghee or Oil- 2 tbsp

Method

  1. Wash and soak the dal for half an hour.
  2. Finely chop onion, tomato, ginger, garlic and green chillies.
  3. Switch on the gas and heat the pressure cooker. Add dal, 3 cups of water, 1 tsp salt and turmeric and put the lid on.
  4. Pressure cook it for 5-7 whistles and switch off the gas. Let the pressure release from the cooker.
  5. Heat a kadhai or pan and add ghee to it. When its hot then drop in the bay leaf, cumin seeds and Asafoetida (hing) to it and fry for few seconds.
  6. Add chopped ginger, garlic and chillies to it and fry until raw flavour goes off .
  7. Now add the chopped onions and fry till it turns slightly brown in colour.
  8. Add chopped onions and little salt and cook till the tomatoes are cooked and mushy.
  9. Add little water and spices(red chilli powder, coriander powder and garam masala) and cook in on medium flame for 5 minutes. Let the masala dry.
  10. Then add the cooked dal to it and give it a nice mix and let it boil for 5-7 minutes on medium to high flame.
  11. Switch off the gas and garnish it with green coriander and serve hot with Boiled Rice or Roti.
